Get in the Zone: Understand Your Contact Point and Hit Better Groundstrokes!

Learn how adjusting your contact point using the ball’s center of mass transforms your shots.

Hey Tennis Players!

Ever wonder why some shots feel powerful and consistent while others fall flat? The secret often lies in your contact combination—the exact moment and location where you hit the ball relative to its center of mass. In today’s newsletter, we break down the three key phases of contact: on the rise, at the peak, and on the drop. Mastering these concepts can radically improve your spin, pace, and overall control.

1. Understanding the Center of Mass

The center of mass is where the ball’s energy is concentrated, and it shifts as the ball moves through its arc. When you align your contact point with this moving target, you unlock the potential for more powerful and controlled shots. For instance, when the ball is rising, it’s not just about timing—your racket must meet the ball at the ideal spot to harness its energy. This precision is what separates the pros from the amateurs.

2. Hitting on the Rise

When a ball is on the rise, its energy is different from that at the peak or on the drop. In this phase, you should adjust your swing to meet the ball while it’s still ascending. This often means a slightly closed racket face to generate a balanced mix of spin and pace. By doing so, you can attack early and take control of the point before your opponent can set up their return. Try to hit the ball higher up as it is rising towards you and hit through the ball.

3. Hitting at the Peak

The peak of the bounce is a moment of relative stability—the ball’s center of mass is at its highest point. This is the ideal moment for a balanced shot. When you hit the ball at its peak, you achieve a harmonious blend of power and spin, allowing you to keep your shots deep and consistent. Many elite players, like Djokovic, rely on this timing to maintain control during fast exchanges. Aim to hit slightly below the rise point and swing through to your target.

4. Hitting on the Drop

When the ball is dropping, its center of mass shifts lower. Here, your goal is to swing upward to lift the ball, ensuring it clears the net with enough power and spin. This technique is especially useful when defending, as it forces your opponent to work harder to attack your shot. This is what we would call a “shape” shot and not a “drive”.

Final Thoughts

Remember, there isn’t one “perfect” way to hitting a tennis ball—it's about understanding your own strengths and adapting these contact combinations to fit your game. Instead of relying solely on repetitive drills, focus on these key contact points to improve consistency and control, just like the pros do. Reflect on where you naturally hit the ball and make adjustments based on whether it’s rising, at its peak, or dropping.

Take these insights, practice them, and watch as your game transforms. Keep honing your skills, and always strive to find that perfect contact point!

Happy Playing,
Cade & Chris
