How To Choose Your Gamestyle

The hidden cost of indecision and how these three simple steps will end my inconsistent play.

Hey everyone,

Last week, we talked about eliminating shot selection hesitation with "the directionals" – that simple decision tool for knowing where to hit the ball every time.

But here's what I realized after sharing that newsletter: shot-by-shot decisions are just the surface level.

The deeper problem – the one that was really costing me matches – wasn't just "Where should I hit this ball?" It was "What kind of player am I supposed to be?"

"Indecision has caused me hundreds of matches over the years."

That was me, finally admitting to my father what I'd been struggling with for too long: the paralysis of not knowing my game style.

Sound familiar?

You're in the middle of a point, ball coming your way, and for a split second you hesitate. Sure, you might know where to hit it using the directionals we talked about last week. But there's a bigger question running through your mind: Should I be the player who takes this opportunity to attack? Or am I better off playing it safe and setting up the next shot?

That hesitation – even if it's just a fraction of a second – changes everything. Your timing, your commitment to the shot, your confidence in the execution.

But here's what most players don't realize: indecision isn't a mental weakness. It's a clarity problem.

The directionals solve the where. But you also need to know the how and when based on who you are as a player.

The Three-Part Solution That Is Changing My Game

My father and I sat down to create a simple framework to solve this problem once and for all. And it's exactly what your Tennis Game Style Worksheet is designed to help you discover.

Step 1: Define Your Court Geography

The first breakthrough was my father helping me identify where I played my best tennis. For me, it was "the ad side and up at the net."

Think about this for a moment. How often do you consciously consider which areas of the court make you most dangerous?

This isn't about what you think you should be good at. It's about honest self-assessment of where you actually win points.

This is exactly what Section 2 of your worksheet addresses: "Define Your Playing Style" and "Court Positioning." If you haven't completed this section yet, this is your wake-up call.

Step 2: Embrace Strategic Limitations

Here's the part that surprised me most when my father pointed it out: "Not every shot in your game needs to be a weapon."

He helped me identify my weaker shots – like running forehands – and instead of trying to fix them, we strategized around them. Accept the limitation, play the higher percentage shot, and set up points to finish with my strengths.

This is counterintuitive for competitive players. We want to fix everything. But there's incredible power in knowing when to do less with certain shots so you can do more with others.

Your worksheet's Section 1 ("Areas for Improvement") isn't just about fixing weaknesses – it's about understanding which ones to manage strategically versus which ones to actively improve.

Step 3: Find Your Strategic Role Model

The game-changer was when my father suggested choosing a professional player with a similar style to mine and studying their decision-making patterns throughout entire matches.

Not just the highlight reels. Not just the winners. The boring shots. The defensive sequences. The way they construct points and manage pressure situations.

This gives you a blueprint for your own decision-making under pressure.

Why This Matters for Your Game Right Now

If you downloaded our Tennis Game Style Worksheet but haven't completed it yet, you're missing out on solving this exact problem.

Every section of that worksheet is designed to eliminate the indecision that's costing you matches:

  • Your strengths analysis helps you identify your "court geography"

  • Your playing style definition clarifies when to be aggressive vs. when to reset

  • Your match analysis section reveals the patterns that lead to your best tennis

  • Your action plan gives you specific focus areas instead of trying to improve everything at once

The Cost of Staying Undecided

Here's what happens when you don't have clarity about your game style:

You practice everything but master nothing. You try to play like different players depending on your mood or your opponent. You second-guess yourself during crucial points because you don't have a clear strategic framework.

The result? Inconsistent performance, frustration, and that feeling that you're working hard but not getting better.

Your Action Step This Week

If you've been sitting on that worksheet, here's your challenge:

Block out 20 minutes this week and complete Section 2: "Define Your Playing Style."

Don't overthink it. Don't try to describe the player you want to become. Describe the player you are RIGHT NOW.

  • What's your preferred game style currently?

  • Where do you feel most comfortable on court?

  • Against which types of opponents do you naturally excel?

Once you have that foundation, the rest of the worksheet becomes much easier to complete.

And here's the bonus: start thinking about which professional player has a similar style to yours. You don't need to copy them exactly, but having that reference point will help guide your tactical development.

The Bottom Line

After losing hundreds of matches to indecision, this conversation with my father changed everything. A couple of months later, my results started improving dramatically. Not because my strokes got better, but because I eliminated the hesitation that was sabotaging my execution.

Your game style worksheet is sitting there, ready to provide the same clarity. The question is: how many more matches are you willing to lose to indecision?

Let us know how it goes.

See you on the court,
Cade & Chris
