Master Your Backhand: Unlock Power & Precision

Discover the secret to a smoother, more powerful backhand by fine-tuning your grip and movement.

Hey Tennis Players!

In today's edition, we're breaking down how to hit a better backhand by focusing on the key roles of your arms and hands. When you hit your backhand, your kinetic chain from the ground up provides the power from back to front, while your hands control the direction and spin. Getting both elements working in harmony can transform your shot into something truly unstoppable.

1. The Power of Your Arms

Your arms are essential for generating power in your backhand. Think of them as the engine that drives your shot from back to front. The stronger and more fluid your arm movement, the more force you can put behind the ball. However, it's important that this power isn't wasted—control is key!

2. Let Your Hands Lead the Way

While your arms provide power, your hands determine the direction and spin of the ball. If your hands and wrists are free to move, you can easily add spin and control. In order to do this, you need to have a light grip on your racquet that allows for fluid wrist movement, resulting in better shot placement and added spin. On the other hand, a too-tight grip restricts your wrist, making it harder to control where the ball goes.

3. Finding the Perfect Grip

A crucial tip: gauge your grip strength. I find fouthat a grip strength of about 4 out of 10 gives you the flexibility needed to generate left spin and maintain control. Lower your grip from a 6 or 7 to a 4 and feel the difference as your wrist moves more freely, letting you direct your backhand with precision.

4. Practice Makes Perfect

Practice this movement: focus on a smooth, powerful arm swing combined with a relaxed, dynamic hand and wrist action. The goal is to have your arms and hands working in unison. As you drill, pay attention to how a lighter grip and controlled wrist movement transform your backhand. With time, these adjustments will become second nature, making your backhand a reliable weapon on the court.

Keep working on these techniques, and soon you'll notice a significant improvement in your backhand's power and precision. Happy hitting!

Best,
Cade & Chris
