1. Master Your Ball Toss
Your ball toss is the foundation of a great serve. It needs to be consistent and well-placed so you can hit all your spots while keeping your opponent guessing. Think about it this way: if you hit 20 serves but have four different ball tosses, each serve is only improving by five reps. However, with a consistent toss, every serve contributes directly to improving your best serve.
2. Add Variety to Your Serves
You probably already know about the three main serve placements: wide, body, and T. But variety isn’t just about placement—it’s also about how you hit those spots. Here’s how you can mix it up:
Topspin serve for more control and kick.
Slice serve to pull your opponent off the court.
Flat serve for maximum speed.
Heavy kick serve to create depth and height.
If you can mix these elements while maintaining the same toss, your opponent will struggle to read your serve, making it a bigger weapon.
3. Elevate Your Second Serve
Your second serve is often more important than your first. Many players slow down their swing to avoid double faults—but this is a mistake! Instead, swing faster and use that energy to create spin and margin over the net. This improves both your second serve percentage and effectiveness.
Think of your second serve like a rally shot: you hit higher over the net with spin to create safety. Apply this same principle, and you’ll have a second serve that keeps your opponent on edge.
4. Practice Your Serve Every Day
Most players leave serving for the end of practice, when they’re already tired. Instead, try serving early in your session when you’re fresh. If possible, break up your training by serving in a separate session after rest. Remember, the serve is the only shot you have full control over, so mastering it can transform your game.
5. Develop a Pre-Serve Routine
Having a consistent pre-serve routine helps you manage pressure and stay focused. For Milos, this meant bouncing the ball an even number of times before every serve. Find a routine that works for you—it could be bouncing the ball, deep breathing, or visualizing your target. A solid routine will center you and set you up to deliver your best serve every time.
