What 10 Years on Court Together Taught Us About Consistency

Even the best players have off days. Here’s the 3-step process we use to find our game when nothing’s working.

Finding Your Level — Every Single Day

After working together on court for more than 10 years, we’ve learned one thing the hard way: even when you’ve trained for hours, traveled, and prepared perfectly, some days your game just disappears.

There have been plenty of sessions where nothing clicked — timing off, confidence low, rhythm gone. And over time, we started realizing something that completely changed how we approach those days.

The best players in the world aren’t always playing their best tennis — they’re just the best at finding their level each day.

That one idea has shaped how we train together.

Every time you step on court, you’re dealing with a mix of small variables — energy, focus, court speed, weather, even mindset. Yesterday’s rhythm doesn’t carry over to today.

So instead of chasing “perfect,” we built a process — a checklist that helps us find our game no matter what kind of day it is.

Here’s the 3-step process that’s pulled us out of countless funks:

1. Preparation is Key

When you play tournaments, you’re constantly adjusting to different balls, different surfaces, different speeds. That’s why early preparation matters more than anything.

Think of it as “beating the bounce.

Get your racquet set, shoulders turned, and eyes locked in before the ball hits your side.

If you’re late here, everything else will be off. Timing, balance, confidence, everything starts to slip.

2. Drive Through the Ball

When confidence fades, it’s easy to get flat-footed and defensive. We always remind each other to move through the ball with our legs, even when we’re not feeling great. It rebuilds rhythm, keeps momentum forward, and brings confidence back faster than anything else.

3. Play at a Controllable Speed

If you’re missing too much, slow things down. Hit to bigger targets. Dial back the ball speed until your timing and feel return. Then, once you’ve found your rhythm, gradually turn up the pace.

Sometimes, the fastest way to find your best tennis is by starting slower.
