Why That High, Slow Forehand Feels Awkward — And How to Fix It
That slow, high, mid-court ball should be your easiest put-away. Here’s the swing adjustment to finally take control.
Hi Everyone,
Chris & Cade here.
Let’s talk about a ball that every club player struggles with and that you’ve probably felt awkward with, too:
The slow, high, floaty mid-court ball that sits up begging to be crushed…
but somehow feels uncomfortable to hit.
You know the one:
Not quite a short ball
Not quite a rally ball
Too high to hit your normal topspin forehand
Too slow to let you wait for it to drop
Players either hit it into the net, sail it long, or bunt it back and let the opponent off the hook.
This is supposed to be a green-light ball.
Here’s why it feels awkward and how to fix it instantly.
Why This Ball Feels So Uncomfortable
Most players try to hit their normal topspin forehand on this mid-court high ball.
The natural forehand swing path for standard rally balls moves like a smooth arc:
From 6 o’clock → up to 12 o’clock
(up the back of the ball, brushing to create topspin)
But here’s the problem:
When the ball is high and slow in the mid-court, the “brush up” part of the swing doesn't match the height of the contact.
You end up:
Getting jammed at contact
Lifting the ball too much
Sending the ball long
Or flipping your wrist to create spin at the last second
Your normal swing shape simply doesn’t fit the height of the ball.
So instead of powering through, the ball feels… awkward.
The Fix: Change the Contact Point in Your Swing Arc
Imagine your forehand swing arc like the curve of a rainbow.
When you hit lower balls, you want to meet the ball on the bottom part of the arc so you can brush up the back of it.
But with this higher ball, meeting it low in the arc doesn't make sense, the ball is above that zone.
So instead, you want to meet the ball later in the arc:
✔️ Not at 6 → 12 o’clock
✔️ But more like 4 → 10 o’clock
This changes your swing from:
“Up the back of the ball” (6 → 12)
to
“Across the back of the ball” (4 → 10)
It does four important things:
Still gives you topspin
Flattens the trajectory
Helps you drive the ball deeper
Lets you strike the ball aggressively without sending it long
You’re not swinging harder, you’re swinging smarter.
What This Should Feel Like
Picture this:
You get that high, slow sitter in the mid-court.
Instead of trying to drop your racquet under it and roll up the back of the ball, you…
Set your racquet early
Meet the ball slightly later in your swing arc
Drive across the ball rather than up it
Keep your chest moving forward into the court
Finish high, but not exaggeratedly so
Visually, it will look like you’re “whipping across” the ball, not lifting it.
The ball will travel:
Lower
Faster
Deeper
…and with a trajectory that punishes your opponent instead of giving them a lifeline.
Why This Works
On this ball, you don’t need shape, you need penetration.
A swing path that goes up (6 → 12) adds height but not drive.
A swing path that goes across (4 → 10) gives you:
More speed through the court
Easier timing
Natural topspin without overspin
A more stable contact point (because you're not reaching or lifting)
You turn a problem ball into a weapon.
The Next Time You Get This Ball… Do This
🔥 Step in confidently
🔥 Set early
🔥 Rip across the ball
🔥 Drive through the court
No more babying the ball.
No more sailing it long.
No more awkward hesitation on the put-away.
This small swing-path adjustment turns one of the game’s trickiest “should-be-easy” balls into one of the most fun to crush.
Enjoy the new confidence!
